Cividale was founded by Julius Caesar with the name Forum Iulii, in 568 B.C., this small village became the seat of the first Lombard duchy in Italy and then the residence of the patriarchs of Aquileia for several centuries. Cividale still preserves important clues to the history of the Lombard period, such as the Tempietto, one of the most extraordinary and mysterious pieces of architecture of the Western High Middle Ages.
