ROUTE 1: Cima Sappada - Rifugio Calvi. [STAGE MEDIUM DIFFICULTY].
MEETING POINT with cars: Timau entrance car park - SS52bis (see box for Google maps point). Transfer with a couple of cars for logistics to the point of arrival of the trail. Transfer by minibus to Sappada area.
We tiptoe our way through the alpine terrain, starting from the Baita Rododendro hut. Gradually acclimatising to the altitude and the gentle slope of the route, we cross the first mountain environments with their cool coniferous forests. The gradual ascent leads to the world of rock and high-altitude meadows, heralding the arrival at the first accommodation of the traverse: the Rifugio Pierfortunato Calvi, at 2167 m altitude.
Total difference in altitude: ascent 900m
STAGE 2: Calvi Hut - Wolayerseehuette Hut. [DEMANDING STAGE].
As in any self-respecting alpine crossing, an early wake-up call awaits hikers to prepare for the longest stage of the walk, made up of long ups and downs and incredible views.
The ascent to Sella Sissanis will then give way to the descent to the green glades surrounding the Sorgenti di Fleons.
It won't be long before a gradual ascent will take you to the ancient massif of Volaia and the splendid Pera Lake. The name of the Passo Giramondo, which you will then cross, identifies all the wonder of the view that will stretch before your eyes.
The descent from the pass is steep and demanding, then into the upper basin of Volaia, heralding the approach to the goal. With the last ascent, walkers will finally be able to admire the glittering view of Lake Volaia, until they can rest their weary limbs in the cosy Austrian Refuge at Lake Volaia (1955 m).
Total altitude difference: ascent 1100m - descent 1100m. Length: approx. 18 km.
STAGE 3: Wolayerseehuette Refuge - Marinelli Refuge. [STAGE MEDIUM DIFFICULTY].
In the morning (weather permitting), we will take a walk around Lake Volaia, to discover the geological wonders that these ancient rocks hold in store for us. We will then embark on the long, rocky descent towards the valley floor to circumvent the ridges of Cima Lastrons del Lago (the itinerary does NOT follow the Spinotti path).
We will then reach the Rifugio Tolazzi, where we will be able to refresh ourselves adequately, and from where we will then set off again to tackle the afternoon climb.
On an agile cart track we climb up the Rio Morareto valley to reach the coveted saddle between Pic Chiadin and Monte Floriz, on which lies our last destination, the last refuge at altitude: Rifugio Marinelli.
Total altitude difference: downhill 600m - uphill 800m.
STAGE 4: Rifugio Marinelli - Monte Croce Carnico Pass Road. [STAGE MEDIUM DIFFICULTY].
The abandonment of high-altitude environments will be softened by the majesty and beauty of the places traversed. Large rocky fields, furrowed by signs and traces of ancient shapers of the past, tell the story of geological eras and ice movements.
We will pass through the magnificent Conca dei Monumenz, where the word does not lie: monuments sculpted by the hand of nature stand as testimony to portentous forces.
A long descent will take us towards the hairpin bends leading to the Monte Croce Carnico Pass, where we will have left the car on the first day and where our adventure will end.
Total height difference: downhill 1000m
