DAY 1: PORDENONE, VALVASONE AND WINE TASTING
Arrival at the hotel in the hilly area of Pordenone, and departure for Valvasone, a small town on the right bank of the Tagliamento River, rich in historical memories such as the Medieval Castle, the Renaissance-style square, its old town centre, the medieval village and other Renaissance buildings. After the individual walking tour you can visit one of the most beautiful local wine cellars, have a light lunch with typical Friulian wines and taste local cheeses and cold cuts. DAY 2: SPILIMBERGO, POFFABRO, MANIAGO
After breakfast full-day excursion to Spilimbergo, a characteristic village. Spilimbergo is known for its decorative mosaics and for its prestigious "Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli", a unique institution founded in 1922. The School teaches Roman, Byzantine and modern mosaic techniques. After the individual visit (reservation required) of the school, walk through the old town centre to visit the castle Palazzo Dipinto. Free lunch. In the afternoon departure for Poffabro, a very ancient and particular village near the Dolomites where its buildings have been built with suggestive stone walls and wooden balconies. On the way back visit Maniago, known for the production of knives, excellence of Made in Italy, appreciated all over the world. Possibility to visit the Museo dell'Arte Fabbrile e delle Coltellerie (Museum of Manufacturing Art and Cutlery), which collects information on steel processing in the factories of the area. Return to the hotel, dinner at the hotel restaurant and overnight stay.
DAY 3: COLLIO AREA AND BORDER TOWN OF GORIZIA
After breakfast check out and departure for Gorizia, private guided tour, typical atmosphere of a border town. In the Transalpine Square, which was physically divided by a wall, you walk with one foot in Italy and one foot in Slovenia. Gorizia, due to its geographical position, has always been culturally influenced by different civilisations: Latin, Slavic and Germanic. Situated on the eastern border of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, it has always played a leading role in Central Europe and also during the medieval period. Free lunch. In the afternoon departure for the renowned Collio Friulano area, well known for its wines such as Tocai Friulano, a dry, fresh and aromatic white wine and Ribolla Gialla D.O.C.G. Visit to a local winery and wine tasting. Afterwards, departure for another winery located in an ancient 13th century castle surrounded by vineyards, where you will be hosted for the two nights. Visit to the ancient winery and wine tasting. Gourmet dinner at the resort restaurant and overnight stay.
DAY 4: AQUILEIA AND GRADO, LUNCH BY THE SEA
After breakfast departure for Grado, a beautiful historical village situated in the natural setting of the lagoon. Individual walking tour in its historical Roman centre: the main square with Roman ruins, the churches decorated with ancient mosaics. Fish lunch in a typical trattoria in the historic centre. In the afternoon, on the way back, stop in Aquileia, a very important city of the Roman Empire and many years later the main centre for the spread of Christianity in Northern and Eastern Europe. Since 1998 it has been a UNESCO site for its archaeological area and the beautiful floor mosaics preserved in the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta. Departure towards the hotel in the Collio area, free dinner at your choice among the restaurants of the hotel and overnight stay.
DAY 5: MARANO, THE LAGOON AND WINE TASTING
Breakfast at the hotel, check out and departure for Marano Lagunare, an ancient village that faces directly onto the Friulian lagoon. You will find an enchanting landscape between the lagoon and the typical "Casoni", historical dwellings built on stilts that are still used by the local inhabitants especially during the summer. Possibility of taking a boat trip with lunch in a "Casone" on request. Possibility to visit the Lagoon Museum, which tells the history, culture and traditions of the lagoon. In the afternoon, stop in a very special local winery, where the vineyards are located directly on the lagoon and wine tasting. Departure for Trieste, accommodation in the B&B rooms on the Carso with a splendid view of the sea. Dinner in a typical restaurant and overnight stay.
DAY 6: TRIESTE
After breakfast admiring the gulf of Trieste, whole day to dedicate to visiting the city. Trieste under the Habsburg dynasty was one of the key cities of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, as it was an imperial port. Private guided tour with departure from Piazza Unità to visit the historic centre, Piazza Unità and Palazzo Stratti with the ancient Caffè degli Specchi; the Roman ruins, the synagogue and the Orthodox churches. The link between Trieste and coffee began in the 18th century, when the city became one of the key ports of the Mediterranean thanks to its shippers, traders and roasters. The city is also renowned for its iconic old cafes selling the finest quality coffee, frequented over the centuries by writers and poets such as James Joyce, Franz Kafka, Italo Svevo and Umberto Saba. Free time for lunch and an individual visit. In the late afternoon meeting with a tourist guide and historical expert for a pleasant walk of 1 hour for some anecdotes of the Liberty Trieste and aperitif in a historical place. DAY 7: THE GIANT CAVE, MIRAMARE CASTELE AND WINE TASTING
After breakfast departure for the Trieste's Karst, to the famous Giant Cave where it is possible to make an accompanied tour with a specialized guide (duration about 1 hour). It is considered the most touristic cave in the world, a perfect example of an underground karst environment. It is listed by the Guinness World Record for its impressive caves as the 'Great Cave'. The maximum depth reached by visitors is 101.10m. Light lunch in a typical tavern in the karst rock area with tasting of local wines included.
