Discover also Best of Friuli: The best wines meet local flavours and culture. Venetian rule in Friuli Venezia Giulia began in the 15th century, when the Venetian Republic extended its influence over the region. During this period, Friuli Venezia Giulia saw important changes, especially in the field of architecture and culture. In fact, towns began to develop following the Venetian model, with the construction of palaces, loggias and squares that recalled the style of the Serenissima. Moreover, the Venetian administration brought political and economic stability to the region, fostering the development of trade and crafts. The cities of Udine, Cividale and Pordenone became centres of trade due to their strategic position. This favoured the integration of Friuli Venezia Giulia into the Adriatic trade routes, contributing to its economic growth. However, Venetian rule was not all good. In fact, the Republic imposed high taxes and strict control over local activities, creating discontent among the population. Despite this, the Venetian period left an indelible mark on the culture and artistic heritage of Friuli Venezia Giulia. In conclusion, Venetian rule represented a period of great transformation for Friuli Venezia Giulia, with lasting effects on the region's architecture, economy and culture.
