For Wild Dinaric Forests Snežnik: The Snowy Mountain Forests 18-20 July 2025

Grad Sneznik
13861
Fourth stage of the journey - which started from Trnovski Gozd and ended at Nojtranski Trikotnik - that will gradually take us from season to season to discover the Dinaric forests between Slovenia and Croatia. We will walk for three days across the Snežnik plateau, the highest non-Alpine peak in Slovenia (1796 m), often lashed by the Bora wind. We will pass through forest environments and alpine meadows, with summer blooms of great botanical interest. The naturalistic peculiarities of the area are many: we will try to illustrate them together with the environmental hiking guides.

Route information

DIFFICULTY: TREKKING of MEDIUM difficulty Forest tracks, PZS (the Slovenian CAI) trails and marked long-distance trails. No exposed sections. PROGRAMME:

DAY 1 | Friday, 18 July | In the forests of Mašun

We will set off from the fascinating Grad Snežnik and immediately plunge into the Dinaric forest, the realm of Europe's largest predatory mammals. We will walk in their stealthy footsteps across some picturesque karst saddles and mysterious glades, until we arrive at the ruins of Grad Mašun, the heart of the hunting grounds of the Schönburg-Waldenburg family. At the inn we will find refreshments and accommodation for the first night. Packed lunch along the way, a la carte dinner at the inn not included in the price.

Length: 15.5 km Height difference: ascent approx. 610 m / descent 170 m

DAY 2 | Saturday, 19 July | On the roof of the plateau: the Snežnik summit

The following morning, after breakfast at the inn, we will continue our walk through Tolkienian forests and romantic sinkholes until we emerge beyond the tree line and reach the mantle of mountain pines, now on the summit ridge.
Amidst the blossoms of the high-altitude meadows, caressed by the wind, we will finally reach the scenic peak of Veliki Snežnik, the spectacular crowning glory of the day's stage. Packed lunch along the way. In the evening, we will reach the hut where we will have dinner and spend the night.

Length: 14 km . Height difference: ascent 910 m, descent 140 m

DAY 3 | Sunday 20 July | Lepi Dol and Leskova Dolina

After breakfast, we begin the long descent along the eastern ridges of Snežnik, crossing the entire plateau again and reaching Lepi Dol, a bucolic glade that will suddenly appear to us in all its splendour. We will then continue on to the hamlet of Leskova Dolina and then advance through karstic ups and downs to the starting and finishing point of our three wonderful days in the Dinaric forests. Packed lunch along the route

Length: 20.5 km. Height difference: ascent 160 m - descent 1370 m.
